River Avon Footbridge Competition
As part of the the Stratford-Upon-Avon Waterfront Masterplan and to coincide with the redevelopment of the Royal Shakespeare Theatres, Warwickshire County Council held an international competition to design a new pedestrian crossing over the River Avon.
Located both to complete an existing tourist route and to enhance the towns existing pedestrian and cycle infrastructure the given site was within one of the towns 'classic views'.
With Stratford's million tourists a year beating a well-worn path, the competition opened the opportunity to create not only a link but also a new public place within the town. A place both sitting comfortably within the existing environment while creating a new vantage point and views of the historic town.
In order that the 'route' and the 'space' elements could co-exist the design split the bridge into two components. Designed to balance one another the void between offers a close and direct view of the heavily used waterway.
