URBAN PRINCIPLE
The project is located in block 4 of the new ZAC Arras Europe. It is part of a project of revaluation of the neighborhoods in the south of the city of Lille designed by the office of Nicolas Michelin et Associés. Block 4 surrounds the « active » park of 4 ha which integrates the existing and future amenities and relies the North and South of Lille. The urban principle defined by the urban planners is to create a diversified sector with individual and semi collective dwellings in a qualitative environment in front of the future « active » park. TANK’s project consists in 22 dwelling collective building, 5 semi-collective dwellings and 6 individual houses.
ARCHITECTURAL AND VOLUMETRIC PRINCIPLES
The urban principle and its main points reflect the architectural layout of the buildings: verticality and horizontality - inside and out – treatment of interaction and the vis-à-vis. The principle of volume and façade treatment is organized in the same way regardless of the facades, which avoids the effect of front and rear facades resulting from the street front alignment of buildings. The architectural principle defines, from this point of view, a horizontal structure marked by bands who receives a fill-in facades more or less free in their volume. These facades are punctuated by a vertical frame. The houses and the collective buildings enter right to the heart of the block which becomes a common space for strolling and playground. The heart of the block is also accessible from the public space.
Collective building – 22 housing:
Along the active park designed by Nicolas Michelin is being developed a collective housing building. The work of folds and skin vibration façade permits permeability of the outdoor spaces opening on wide terraces overlooking the park and the interior privacy relative to the park. The upper floors designed stepped permit housing to receive their own terrace as well as a roof terrace widely planted but not accessible. The vertical composition of the building is a superimposing on each level of a very opaque band adorned with bricks and with a metallic and glass band lighting the inside of the living rooms.
Semi-collective building – 5 housing:
This collective building is a set of two compact blocks separated by the vertical circulations and the common premises. In the angle of both streets, the building goes up in R+2 and creates the articulation with the houses. The materiality of bricks is very present. The arrangement of the colors of bricks is more homogeneous in the proportions of dark and clear. The insertion of bricks in the red tones marks the connection with houses. A game of folds is also set up in this project to give also to housing a south oriented outside space for each one.
6 houses:
The implantation of the houses between each other allows a vibration of the facade on the street of this entity. Behind an alignment given by the rhythm of the sequences of gates, low-brick-walls, fences and gardens, every volume of house differs from his neighbor by a light gap. The progressive degradation of the arrangement of bricks going of a mixture darkened towards a mixture of mainly light gray bricks also allows the reading of the individualities. In these compositions, red bricks are punctually inserted reminding the traditionally domestic use of this color.
MATERIAL
These three entities are built with the same material: bricks and aluminum for the windows frame. Each building will be different by a use of the bricks tones, from the anthracite grey to the light gray, and the red bricks for the smaller collective building and the houses. The brick has been chosen for its sustainability, its mastered implementation and its aesthetic qualities. The chosen bricks will present characteristics allowing the development of the architectural party and the vibration of facades under the wished light. Bricks will have a strong materiality, not smooth, obtained by a traditional hand moulding. The collective building – 22 housing is made of superimposed ribbons and of alternated materiality. For every floor a headband of bricks forms the fixed lighters and deploys to create the spaces of balconies. The upper headband made of metallic panels and glazed frames offers the openings of living areas. In the recesses of balconies, all the height of the facade is opened by wide plate glass windows on the living rooms. Glass lifelines inserted into the headbands of bricks are facing these big bay windows.
