Construction and restructuration of ‘Albert Kahn – Musée et Jardins’
WAVING FILTER / ENGAWA
Introduction : Concept
We propose a reinterpretation of a Japanese traditional architectural element: the “Engawa” Engawa is not a separation but a connection between interior and exterior. Delicate screens of metal and wood opens the built object towards its environment. Engawa makes the building fade into nature, frame and filter the views over the garden, and provide shaded areas that contributes to the comfort.
New museum : an icon integrated in the site
The new building respects the existing environment but at the same time is erected as a city landmark. It offers an entrance promenade to a zen garden internal court that protects the access from the street noise and distributes into 3 independent functions: 1. a conference pole in the old building, 2. a restaurant with tea salon, 3. a museum pole in the new building
On the south façade, the movement of the metallic louvers opens up in the upper part to offer some views from the street through the exhibition space and into the garden. On the north façade, screens out of steel and wood approaches the building into the human scale of the garden. The new building is a self-sustainable part of the garden, like any other natural element. It uses geothermal energy pumping over the subterranean water reserve to provide all the energy needs of the new building and the old gallery
The garden : Integration into the museum proposal
The idea of Museum-Garden is to be pushed to the limit. The promenade through the garden is a museographic experience. The garden is integrated in the museum proposal. The “Estampes” exhibition, the “Arts et Jardin” exhibition and the “Salle de plaques” exhibition are proposed in the existing buildings as part of the promenade inside the garden.
Existing buildings: Respect to the heritage
All existing buildings are treated with the greater respect of Albert Kahn patrimonial heritage either in their transition to exhibition spaces or as administration spaces. We want to bring the intervention on these buildings to the minimum while ensuring a proper functionality.
