Prasad Residence
Located in South Delhi, the Prasad residence is home to two generations of a joint family. The challenge was to meet the needs and privacy of different generations and units of the family yet create a cohesive unit where the family could interact and be together.
Single family residences with ample open spaces are increasingly becoming a rarity in the Delhi and the design optimises the availability of open space bringing ample light and a sense of outdoors to the spaces.
We had to create a dramatically different home visually, spatially and functionally while working with an existing structure. of the old house. Minimal alteration was made to the structural grid. Certain walls were added and some introduced to organize the layout around three vertical plates – 2 at outer peripheries and a central spine.
The palette is minimal, and the central wall is the signature feature of the house clad in varying textures of grey/black granite. This dominant element connects the length of the house, the inside with the outside while framing views and spaces. The circular opening in the wall facing the street, dramatically frames views of trees and the sky as one approaches the house along the street.
The skylights and courtyards use changing light to sculpt the spaces, playing off textured surfaces of wood and stone, bringing the surrounding nature into intimate contact with both the public and private parts of the house. The daylight and seasons are reflected off the warm, natural materials.
