House Renovation and Extension
The house is situated in an especially shady basin on the banks of the River Drize. The plot was occupied by a very old building that was in such a bad condition that is was a candidate for demolition.
While considering how to preserve the intact structures of the house and replace the missing parts in a simple, clearly recognisable way, the project inevitabely became spatially complex.
The old quarry-stone house accommodates the private rooms, while the new half-timber extension contains the reception rooms and the garage. The house is accessed via a front courtyard with a tree and a fountain. By walking down the steps towards the river, one enters the living rooms.
Inside, the old façade and old materials can still be seen. The old and new details follow the characteristics of the respective building parts.
The rooms in the old section have a domestic dimension, while the visible flooring joists were reconstructed and the doors replaced. The new building is characterised by high ceilings. The entire space is immediately perceptible as one enters the room.
