Landscape Design Baakenhafen
The Baakenhafen outlines a quarter of Hamburg’s Harbour-City district which is not developed so far. With the open space around the dock the city takes a chance to establish a new landscape quality that goes beyond the concepts of park, square or urban borders.
The concept of planorama zooms out and focuses on the connection of the area with the natural landscape of the lower Elbe. The form develops out of the frequent change between alluvial deposit and tidal erosion and creates a natural link to the surrounding landscape. These forms playing with the promenade that surrounds the area and with the island are on the lower level of the basin. On this level, which is in parts affected by the tidal changes, the wharf spaces rize 4 meters with a new built housing area. The connecting ramps between the levels cut into the wharf like tidal creeks.
The island in the harbour dock disguises the hard artificial form of the former quay and already evokes concepts with a more natural form and atmosphere. At the same time the island gives place to various functions like playgrounds, relax and sporting areas.
The outline draws attention to the enormous tidal range of 5 meters in the area and at the same time matches the technical expectations of water construction by bridging the tidal range with stairs and embankments.
