Schwarzwaldhaus Freiburg
The existing house (8 meters square, convoluted and cramped, the main story just 2.3 meters in height, the upper story in a high-pitched roof) becomes the fulcrum of a new complex. The extension is divided into two parts which either surround or grow out of the existing structure, according to ones perspective. Including the old building, there are now three distinct but connected volumes. The new structures are arranged around the existing trees, framing variously oriented sheltered spaces (midday and evening terraces) in connection with the new living area. Inside, the transition from old to new is marked by an increase in room heights, created (in spite of the continuous ceiling) by sinking the floor in the extension. The style, material, color and surface treatment of the extensions - pearl white plaster and a single type of window form the largest possible contrast to the existing structure, but without expressive gestures. The facades can be read as a roll of patterned fabric that winds itself around the new volumes, with window openings and wall components following one another rhythmically at identical intervals.
