Music School And Auditorium
Located in a scattered area close to Coimbra University the building intends to build up an urban space including in its design the new footbridge over the road.
The conservatoire is divided into two volumes separated by a glass fissure that gives way both to the music school and to the footbridge, one containing the auditorium and the other the classroom area. The main façade of the building is turned towards the plaza where the entrance to the auditorium is placed.
The music and rehearsal rooms are organised around two linear patios that provide an open space for the students. Larger rooms are placed under the sloped zinc covers of the building. The concrete structure makes up the exterior faces complemented with sheets of natural stone and aluminium.
The 500-seat concert hall is conceived as an independent volume that may host musical and drama events. The different activities, which may take place: opera, theatre, concerts and lectures, have been taken into consideration without allowing their diversity to give it the character of an anonymous, all purpose room. Its large glazed screen will announce to the city the cultural events that will take place in the auditorium.
