The Stadshuis in Nieuwegein is 3XNs latest project outside Denmark. It is special because it mixes the traditional city hall with a library, a multi-cultural center, and commercial facilities. This way, the city hall merges with the every-day world. 3XN focused on uniting the wish for intimacy and openness with the desire to envelope an important democratic institution with a certain dignity.
The new Stadshuis is designed with terraced open floors that are rotated around a common atrium. The building is an important part of the densification of the city center and aims to tie the complex context together. Being part of an ambitious city plan, the building is designed with indentations to avoid blocking the daylight, which the neighboring buildings have previously enjoyed. The seven levels are connected by an open winding staircase and the rotation of the floor plans allows the visitors a wide view from one floor to the next all the way up and down through the building.
