House in the house
“The path is laid by walking”, writes the client while satisfactorily sitting on his terrace looking back over the mutual design process of his new home overlooking Innsbruck’s
roofscape.
Participation at its best – the overlap of desire and imagination of the user with vision of the architect – has been practised at this loft extension.
The design idea for the spatially complex concept is simple as it is effective. Two boxes introduced on different levels regulate the volumes of the new loft space that stays enjoyable in its entire dimension. Inside and outside flow in each other, Up and Down release one another.
The outcome is a small Raumwunder, an open generous living area with ‘sitting zones’ of different scale while the creative means are kept unspectacular. The building sculpture’s impressive effect and the atmosphere of the space are developed by consequent use of materials, precise detailing and through spatially generous thinking. Competence and mutual appreciation of client and architect have raised this common construction brief into a prime example.
