NORDIC PAVILION

SVERRE FEHN

From the Publisher

“Every existing tree grows unhindered inside the building, finding a total freedom through the roof. The main tree honored, as the dominant structure gives room for its participation; this is the place where the unity between nature and building is at its maximum.“ Sverre Fehn (1962)

The Nordic Pavilion for the Venice Biennale (1958-1962), designed by Sverre Fehn and realized as a tour de force in long-span concrete construction, when he was only 28, is a project that deals with Nordic identity but it's also strongly related to the city of Venice. "The pavilion carries the ingredients of Venice. The city belongs to the water from which came its inspiration. The areas of green contrast with the water. The park with its landscape of grass and trees is very precious and scarce".

Åke E:son Lindman's reportage of the Nordic Pavilion go beyond architectural documentation to highlight the authorial intentions and visions behind it. Lindman's poetic vision catches lights and materials of this masterpiece and has a decisive impact on our perception of Fehn's built space.
